Apple's New Postscript Level 2 Driver has been released. There is a US version and an International version.
As the driver was jointly developed by Apple and Adobe, there will be two packages. Adobe will release PSPrinter 8.0 with the Laserwriter 8 and 225 Postscript Printer Definition Files for a wide range of printers. This package will be available from InfoMagic Customer Service at a date to be specified.
Apple's package includes the driver with PPD's for Apple printers. It is available on Applelink and has been downladed to most BBS systems. Apple Australia is still undecided whether to follow the US and offer the upgrade for $30 through Micromatch as well. Printer manaufacturers are responsible for offering upgrade PPD's for their printers.
If you need a very large collection of PPD files then you will have to wait for the Adobe product or contact your supplier. Apple PPD files are available on BBS systems and from your local reseller.
HP 4M users should contact HP for the new files. HP is providing a free upgrade, while Infomagic is charging $40.
Note that a number of new system drivers will be available from Apple later this year and will probably be made available in a similar way. Expect QuickDraw GX, Speech Manager 1,0, Sound Manager 3.0 & SCSI Manager 4.3.
Remote WakeUp Cables
This is a subject that has been of great interest to FaxModem users.
Farallon has a Remote Wakeup Cable that only works on dual ADB port Macs like the Mac II and Sophisticated Circuits has a remote powerblock that is only available in a 110v version.
Now Netcomm has developed a remote wakeup cable with an ADB passthrough. that is included with all the Netcomm Pocket Fax modem. The Cable can be used with any Mac with ADB PowerUp.
The cable has a DIn 8 connection for the Mac modem port, a 25pin modem serial plug with Male and female ADB connectors.
The cable is available for $88 and can be used with modems that have a 25pin serial connector. An adapter would be required to use it with modems that use a 9pin serial connector.
